India-Japan leaders evolve road map for ICT business
INDIA-JAPAN Round Table on ICT and Environment: Opportunities and Challenges organised by India Center Foundation on Friday, January 8 witnessed top business leaders from both countries evolving a road map for the ICT business till the year 2020. A bevy of top industrialists, businessmen and decision makers also discussed plans to make effective use of ICT applications in tackling global warming and to ensure clean economic growth.
The Round Table was organised by India Centre Foundation (ICF) at the Aamby Valley as part of its initiative to further India-Japan global partnership. Japan's minister for Internal Affairs and Communication, Haraguchi Kazuhiro was the chief guest on the occasion.
Business leaders from India, who participated in the Round Table included Harsh Manglik, Vice Chairman Nasscom; Ramanathan Ramanan- CEO & MD CMC Ltd, Dr. P Raja Mohan Rao (Managing Director), United Telecom; Pradeep Gupta - CEO, Cyber Newsroom; Madan Mohan- CEO, NABCOM; Vimal Wakhlu - Director Technical, TCIL; Vipul Kant, CEO IAP Company Ltd; Girish Paranjpe - Jt. CEO - IT Business & Member of Board, Wipro; Sunil K Goyal, CEO, Beetel (Bharti) among others.
Setting the tone for the Round Table , Vibhav Kant Upadhyay, chairperson, India Center Foundation, while welcoming the delegates from both India and Japan impressed upon the need for industry leaders from both the countries to evolve a long term road map for a mutually beneficial and win-win business scenario for both the countries.. This, he said would not only give direct business opportunities but also set an unparalleled example of global partnership between the companies from both the countries, which will allow them to harness ICT business across the globe.
Giving an example in the context of the ICT, Vibhav identified the two countries viz India and Japan as the hardware, which needed a joint operating system, which could be evolved through such round tables and conferences.
This operating system would define the processes, systems, rules and ways to increase the efficiency and productivity of hardware, which can than be used to run various applications such as joint ventures and partnerships, he added.
Speaking on the occasion, Japan's Internal Affairs and Communication Minister, Kazuhiro Haraguchi, said that his nation wanted stronger relations between India and Japan particularly in the field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).
He also emphasized on a joint project around Delhi and Mumbai to strengthen the relationship between the two countries.
"For strengthening the relationship between Japan and India, in field of ICT, I would like to see the implementation of activities in a concentrated manner. This includes joint projects around Delhi and Mumbai" he added.
On this occasion, Yamada Ryuji - president of NTT Docomo, also shared his company's vision for the Indian market and also expressed his views on how ICT could help in saving the environment.
Speaking at the Round Table, Vice chairman NASSCOM, Harsh Manglik said that there was a great opportunity for companies from India and Japan to come together in the spirit of global partnership to boost economic growth through out the world.
The high level delegation from Japan, which participated in the Round Table included Yamazaki Yasuyo - Advisor Ministry of Internal affairs, Communications & Telecom, Terasaki Akira, Vice minister for internal affairs & communications, Yamada Ryuji - President of NTT Docomo, Shimatani Yoshiharu - Vice President of KDDI, Matsumoto Tetsuzo - senior executive Vice President of Softbank Mobile Corp, Katsuki Junzo - Executive Officer of Kyocera, Wakao Masayoshi - Senior Managing Director of Association of radio industries and businesses., Sukemune Yoshiyuki -President of Communications and Information network Association of Japan (CIAJ).
It was also resolved at the Round Table that the next conference shall be held at a time coinciding with Indian Japan Global Partnership Forum to be held in the later part of this year. The delegates also appreciated the environment at the Aamby Valley as it gave them an opportunity to discuss and brainstorm on issues in an informal manner.

Two fold programs at Japan and India Strengthening the manpower to 750 - For the Home-appliances and mobile industry.
I.A.P. Company Ltd., Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, a software development company, will increase their manpower by two fold from the current number of 125 to 250 within a year. At the same time, India based programmers will be increased to 500 from the present 250. By doing so, I.A.P. will accelerate their efforts to fulfill the vacuum in the field of embedded system for home-appliance and mobile industries.
I.A.P is planning to increase the human resources at New Delhi development center and the development centers in Tokyo and Kobe to approximately 500 and 250 respectively. At each center, graduates from the Indian Engineering Colleges (IIT) and other highly educated graduates will be placed as backbones. At New Delhi research center, technical personnel will be trained for 2 -3 months about the techniques and business customs required here in Japan.
I.A.P. intends to divide the development works in Japan and in India by designing the embedded software for home-appliances etc. in Japan and doing the development work in India. In order to grasp and digest the clients requirement fully, for every ten engineers, one English speaking Japanese programmer is recruited. If clients prefer the entire development in Japan, I.A.P is ready to summon its programmers to Japan.
I.A.P. has an IT research center at New Delhi, where around 30 researchers are conducting research on the techniques like Linux, T-Kernel, embedded software development etc.
I.A.P. was founded in 1996 by Mr. Upadhyay, who had been a student of Dr. Ken Sakamura, professor of Tokyo University and started the full-scale operations in 2000. Unlike other software development companies based in India, I.A.P. is exclusively serving Japanese companies.

iMode Type Technology for India
CHALLENGING the monopoly of Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) in mobile Internet technology in India, Access Company of Japan has decided to bring its own technology similar to iMode to NTT DoCoMo, into India.
Access, which has provided the mobile Internet technology to NTT DoCoMo for iMode, also plans to (Click here to see complete details) use India as a base to develop a complete end-to-end mobile Internet technology framework and solution. It plans to market the same in other countries as well.
The company has forged a strategic alliance with a Delhi-based software firm IAP Company Ltd. for preliminary business activities and plans to convert the relationship into a joint venture in the future, to roll out full fledged development and implementation operations.
In an exclusive interview with the Financial Express, Access co-founder and chief executive office Toru Arakawa said. "We have partnered with NTT DoCoMo in developing iMode and have the capability to offer solutions for access devices, mobile operators and content providers to enable mobile Internet."
"India offers an appropriate destination for us to develop a complete solution because of its software skills, process capabilities and spread of mobile telephony." Said Mr. Arakawa adding that he would like to develop a technology framework in India similar to iMode to Japan, with the help of Indian mobile operators and the government.
Mr. Arakawa, who is currently in Delhi, claimed that he had met all major mobile operators in India including Tata, Reliance, BPL and Bharti. "We have got a very positive response from these operators. There were a few misconceptions in their minds about Mode and Access' technologies and their compatibility, which have been cleared," he said claiming that the Access technology and products were compatible with both GSM and CDMA systems.
"Access has tied up with IAP as we do not understand Indian markets, culture and business that much and need a local partner to be successful in the market. Moreover, IAP understands Japanese business culture very well as it is operating in Japan also." he said.
Access is a $100-million software company based in Tokyo, Japan and employs a workforce of around 500 people. The company has developed Internet browsers for mobile devices, televisions and fixed telephones and sells them under the brand name, NETFront. The company is also engaged in implementation of iMode technology solutions in countries of Europe, America and Asia.
According to Mr. Arakwa, the company is currently implementing mobile Internet technology solutions is countries like Germany, Holland, Spain, Hong Kong and developing markets in France, Italy and England.
IAP is a closely-held software company engaged in developing software and providing skill support to Japanese companies and projects. The company also has an office in Tokyo and employs around 150 people. "We specialize and operate only in Japan. IAP provides software development services to Japanese companies. We have also formed a consortium of 30 Indian software companies to offer services and solutions to Japan." Said IAP managing director and chief executive, Vipul Upadhyaya.
